Introduction

What was the Illuminati?

The name Illuminati comes from a Latin word associated with being enlightened or illuminated. It has been used by different groups and in different historical contexts.

The best-known historical example is the Bavarian Illuminati, a secret society founded in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of law. The group emerged during the European Enlightenment, an era marked by debates about reason, religion, authority, education, and political reform.

Its history is documented through historical research, surviving records, and contemporary accounts. Many modern claims about a single, centuries-long Illuminati organization controlling world events go beyond what the available historical evidence establishes.

This page describes that eighteenth-century order. It is not a history of the society that publishes this website, unless the about page says otherwise.

Through the centuries

The historical timeline

Six milestones from the founding in Bavaria to the name’s life in popular culture.

  1. Historic European architecture

    1776 — The Founding

    The beginning

In Ingolstadt, Bavaria, professor Adam Weishaupt established a secret society initially known as the Perfectibilists and later associated with the name Illuminati. Its ideas emerged from debates about reason, education, religious authority, and social reform during the Enlightenment.

  2. Staged still life of an open book

Late 1770s — Ideas Take Shape

    Structure and secrecy

The society developed internal structures, membership grades, and systems of communication. Its members pursued an organized program shaped by Enlightenment ideas, while secrecy helped distinguish the group from ordinary public associations.

  3. Historic stone lodge exterior

    Around 1780 — Expansion

    A wider network

The Illuminati expanded its network, including through connections with Masonic circles. Its membership included educated and socially connected individuals. Its actual reach was significant enough to attract attention, but later claims about its power often went beyond the surviving evidence.

  4. A stone courtyard with warm evening light

    1784–1785 — Suppression

    The order banned

Bavarian authorities issued prohibitions against secret societies, and the Illuminati was suppressed. Weishaupt lost his professorship and eventually left Bavaria. These measures marked the collapse of the original group’s public historical trajectory.

  5. An open book beside a carved skull

Late 18th century — The Rise of Conspiracy Narratives

    Fear outlives the order

After the society’s suppression, writers began making broader allegations about secret networks and revolutionary politics. Some accounts attributed major historical events to the Illuminati, helping transform a short-lived society into a lasting subject of suspicion and speculation.

Modern era — History Meets Popular Culture

    A name reused

The word Illuminati now appears in books, films, music, online discussions, and conspiracy theories. Various modern groups have also adopted the name. Such uses do not, by themselves, establish continuity with Weishaupt’s historical organization.

The founder

Adam Weishaupt — the man behind the movement

Adam Weishaupt (1748–1830) was a professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt and the founder of the Bavarian Illuminati.

He developed the society during the European Enlightenment, when intellectuals debated established authority, religious institutions, education, and the role of reason in society.

His legacy remains controversial, partly because the group’s secrecy and later interpretations have made it difficult to separate historical evidence from speculation.

Weishaupt entered a Masonic lodge in Munich in 1777 and used lodge contacts to recruit. Adolph Knigge helped expand the grade system before leaving around 1784. Aliases such as Spartacus were practical secrecy, not proof of supernatural rank.

Context

The Enlightenment and its influence

An era of changing ideas

The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that emphasized reason, debate, knowledge, and the examination of traditional authority. The Bavarian Illuminati emerged within this wider environment. Its history reflects the political and intellectual tensions of its time, including disputes over religion, government, education, and reform.

History versus myth

What does the evidence actually show?

The Illuminati’s history has become surrounded by extraordinary claims. A credible history page explores those claims without presenting them as proven facts.

Documented history

The Bavarian Illuminati was founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, developed during the Enlightenment, and was suppressed by Bavarian authorities in the 1780s. Statutes, letters, and seized papers support a picture of a real but limited network—not a world government.

Claims requiring evidence

Assertions that the historical order secretly controls modern governments, global finance, celebrities, or world events should not be treated as established facts without credible supporting evidence.

A critical approach

Examine original records, reputable historical scholarship, and the context in which claims originated. Distinguish documented events from interpretations, beliefs, and speculation.

Membership on this website is an application to the society that publishes it—not legal continuity with the Ingolstadt order. See the about page for how those subjects are kept apart.
